Cancer Haiku

by Jan Porterfield

Chemo makes me sick

Ironically I get well

I am stronger now.

The scan says I’m sick

I feel well until chemo

It is proven right.

Chemo is not fun

Every other week drip drip

Poison makes me well?

Five hours drip drip

Chemo makes me sick and well

Is this irony?

People with cancer

We live optimistically

With hope, joy and fear.

We meet on Fridays

To talk, drink coffee and laugh

Women with cancer.

How to cure cancer

Chemo and radiation

Plus hope and laughter.

Cancer is not fun

Understanding the absurd

Helps me cope with it.
