My friends at WomenListen warm my heart. They make me laugh and help dry my tears. At times, they have been my island of caring in a sea of chaos! Always, they buoy my spirits and affirm my hopes and dreams.

WomenListen was started in June 2002, as a small group of women coping with cancer. Now, almost two years later, I am still connected to this group of women who support one another. I recognize that the weekly meetings and the retreats are important elements of my wellness journey. These days, I am able to help support others who are facing the challenges of new diagnoses and treatment. Because we are an informal group, women feel free to attend whenever they choose. Some women involved with the group as supporters do not have cancer. Their compassion and commitment are such a gift.

Being diagnosed with locally advanced breast cancer in December 2001 was the most shocking event I have ever experienced. How could it be? I managed to fly under the radar of yearly medical examinations, monthly self-exams, even annual mammograms!  I was devastated. But as the shock wore off, I knew that finding support through a network of women would help me get through the rigorous treatment regimen I had agreed to follow. Having a group of women who really understood my fears, my joys and my “chemo-brain” made a huge difference for me.

I am employed as a school psychologist with the Anchorage School District and I have two sons, ages 12 and 15. I am fortunate to have a supportive and encouraging husband. Certainly, cancer has changed our lives in many ways. After two and a half years, we are adjusting our sails and getting back on course.
